Do you enjoy heat when you’re at the ballpark? This may not be the kind of heat you’d expect while enjoying a baseball game. It’s certainly not a triple digit Edwin Diaz fastball but it may put you on your ass just as fast. I’m talking about Sriracha Night at Safeco Field.
If you have yet to experience Sriracha Night at the Safe I highly suggest giving it a shot if only for the novelty. Besides a fraternity, where else are you going to find all of your favorite foods topped with a surprising amount of Sriracha? Prior to first pitch I found myself wandering around the main concourse in search of the spicy snacks I had been craving all day. When I first saw the inflatable bright red Sriracha bottles I realized I wasn’t sure what to expect. Of course I read the menu prior to the game and planned my evening accordingly but I was still unsure. Were these intense items infused with Sriracha like some sort of culinary experiment gone awry when the first-day-on-the-job line cook accidentally knocks a whole bottle into the mixing bowl? Or was this a well-crafted delicacy from the well know Seattle restaurateur who lends his expertise as the Executive Chef of Safeco Field, Ethan Stowell? Somewhat disappointingly, it was neither of those alternate universes but I trudged on and indulged in the Sriracha night festivities which I knew I might regret around 3:00 AM but then again not all heroes where capes.
I first started my Sriracha filled journey with the Sriracha Macaroni Balls. I figured how could you ever go wrong with deep fried cheese? I was not disappointed. These puppies were as fresh as they come, just pulled out of the fryer and set right in my tray with more than a drizzle of Sriracha. The breading was still crunchy, the macaroni soft, and the cheese took me back to the Mission mac my mom used to make. My next culinary adventure of the night came in the form of sautéed brussels sprouts covered in nacho cheese and, you guessed it, Sriracha. The second course of the night was a bit bit of a letdown as the cheese was slightly over the top and took away from the burnt edges of the brussels sprouts that I so enjoy. Lastly, I had to polish it all off with some dessert. I went with the banana donut with lime glaze. I enjoyed the mix of sweet and spicy but there was no way I was going to finish the fairly large portion of donuts I received. With that said make sure to bring your fearless friends that want to also experiment a little bit.
Despite the initial disappointment I ended up enjoying most every bite I took throughout the night. If your home stadium hosts a Sriracha Night, Tapitio Night or any other amalgamation I highly suggest you give it a go and if you happen to be in Seattle when Sriracha Night comes back around give me a shout. I’m always looking for new friends to enjoy baseball and brussels with.
